The aim of the Advanced Print Design course was to curate a captivating collection of sarees drawing inspiration from the rich cultural heritage of Andhra Pradesh. This project was conducted in collaboration with APCO (the Andhra Pradesh State Handloom Weavers' Cooperative Society Limited).
THE INSPIRATION


KONDAPALLI TOYS
Kondapalli Toys, crafted from wood, originate from Kondapalli in the Krishna district, adjacent to Vijayawada in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh.
Referred to as Bommala colony or toys colony,
this area is renowned for its detailed toy-making artistry. Identified as a geographic indication craft from Andhra Pradesh, Kondapalli toys highlight the area's expert craftsmanship and cultural legacy. The art of crafting is 400-year-old tradition. The artisans who make the toys are referred as Aryakhastriyas.
THE MAKING PROCESS OF KONDAPALLI TOYS
Kondapalli toys are crafted from soft wood, locally known as Tella Poniki, sourced from the nearby Kondapalli Hills, Kondapalli toys are meticulously created. Each part is carved out separately. Makku, a paste of tamarind seed powder & sawdust is used to join pieces together, details and finishing is done. The later step involves coloring with either oil and water-colours or vegetable dyes and enamel paints are applied based on the type of the toys.
